Changes in Left Atrial Size and Cardiac Rhythm in Patients after Mitral Valve Surgery
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Mitral valve disease often leads to dilatation of the left atrium and subsequent atrial fibrillation. We evaluated changes in sinus rhythm and left atrial size in a group of 77 patients (17 men, 60 women; average age, 60.7 years) who underwent mitral valve surgery (53 valve replacements and 24 valve repairs) between January 2000 and September 2001. The mean left atrial size was 56.2 mm before surgery (A), 52.6 mm on discharge from hospital (B) and 50.9 mm at one-year follow-up (C). The differences between A and B and A and C and that between B and C were statistically significant (P<0.001 and P<0.05, respectively) The valve replacement or repair also had a favourable effect on the restoration of sinus rhythm; the proportion of patients in sinus rhythm increased from 33% before surgery to 41% at one-year follow-up. In conclusion, surgical treatment of mitral valve disease results in a significant reduction of left atrial size and, in some patients, also in the restoration of sinus rhythm.

Right sided heart evaluation after successful mitral valve replacement.
Introduction: It is well-documented that right-sided heart dysfunction and significant tricuspid valve regurgitation (TVR) have adverse effects on patient outcomes after left-sided heart valve surgery. Therefore, the evaluation of right ventriclular (RV) function and TR severity in patients who had undergone mitral valve replacement (MVR), associated with/without concomitant su...

Certain subsets of high-risk mitral valve patients are not suitable candidates for transcatheter therapies. The objective of this report is to present a young patient with combined mitral valve and coronary artery disease to illustrate these challenges. In this report, we present a 47-year-old man with longstanding HIV infection who was referred with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) and profound...

Background: Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) refers to a condition in which left ventricular volume is normal or slightly less than normal. Given the differences observed in some Asian patients with TOF, the present study was conducted to investigate left heart by determining Z-scores for the mitral valve in Iranian patients with TOF. Methods: Eligible subjects in this prospective descriptive study c...

AIM The aim of this prospective study was to assess the presence of sinus rhythm and atrial transport function after surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation using cryoenergy, and to evaluate predictors of the success of the procedure. METHODS Between January 2005 and September 2006, 100 consecutive patients underwent left atrial cryoablation as a concomitant surgical procedure (46 patients w...
متن کاملCARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE Expression of connexins 40 and 43 in human left atrium in atrial fibrillation of different aetiologies
Objective: To test the hypothesis that atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with changes in the expression of connexins 40 and 43 in the left atrium with more pronounced changes in mitral valve disease than in lone AF. Methods: Protein concentrations of connexin 40 and connexin 43 were analysed in left atrial tissue of patients undergoing cardiac surgery. One group of patients had lone AF (n ...
